Former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison has urged Liverpool to re-sign Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona, per The Debate (March 11th, 37:46).
What’s he said?
Coutinho, of course, left the Reds in 2018, sealing a £142m move to the Catalan club.
He has somewhat struggled to make an impact in Catalonia, though, and has been spending the season on loan at Bayern Munich.
In total, he made 76 appearances for the Liga club, scoring 21 goals and registering 11 assists, while he has played 32 times for Bayern, scoring nine goals and registering eight assists.
Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?
He is set to return to the Camp Nou at the end of the season but Morrison believes that Jurgen Klopp’s side should look to bring him back to Anfield in the coming months.
He said: “You know who I’d like them to sign? Liverpool fans might start shouting. I think Philippe Coutinho.
“I think he’d be brilliant. He’s in and out of the team at Bayern Munich, not really playing at Barcelona.
“I think he’s special, I loved him at Liverpool.”
Not the worst idea
Bringing a “special” playmaker into the club would be an excellent move for Liverpool.
The Brazil international was exceptional during his time at the Reds, contributing 54 goals and 45 assists in 201 games, and he is valued at £63m by Transfermarkt.
Liverpool don’t really have an out-and-out No.10, with their midfield consisting of the likes of Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum, Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keita.
Bringing Coutinho into the club would allow them to field an attacking midfielder behind the trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane.
Morrison’s idea is not necessarily the worst; Coutinho has found that the grass isn’t always greener since his move away from Merseyside.
Allowing him to come back would give Liverpool an extra string to their tactical bow, and also seal a potentially special reunion.
