Manchester City look set to sign midfielder Yaya Toure from Barcelona for a fee of £28m. However with so many options already available in midfield where will he fit into the team?
Toure has shown himself to be a very good player whilst at Barcelona yet hasn’t been able to hold down a regular starting slot in recently with him constantly in-and-out of the team. Sergio Busquets was the man who coach Pep Guardiola preferred ahead of Toure last season and given his rapid emergence the decision can’t really be argued with. But Toure when given the chance didn’t disappoint for Barca and proved to be a formidable presence in midfield.
For £28m Yaya Toure is set to become the most expensive holding midfielder in English football and City fans must be wondering just what are they getting for their money? Well as well as being formidable Toure has shown to be a competent footballer with good energy levels and good feet. His biggest weakness is probably that he can be a little rash sometimes with challenges, but other than that offers good stability. Interestingly a fan poll was conducted amongst Barcelona supporters as to whether or not they want Toure to leave, and 70 per cent fans voted in favour of him staying.
Given the money that is being spent on Toure there is no way he isn’t going to be a first team regular, so he looks set to start alongside Gareth Barry in a 4-4-2 and should Roberto Mancini play 4-3-3 then those two would likely line up along with Nigel De Jong. This potential arrival looks set to be the final nail in the coffin for Stephen Ireland’s Man City career, and other players could also be seeing themselves depart because of Toure such as Michael Johnson. Toure’s arrival will only boost City’s chances of finally qualifying for fourth place and their long-term aim of winning the league so fans can be excited about this potential signing.
It could be argued that Toure isn’t really ‘needed’ at the club as De Jong and Vincent Kompany are good central midfielders who are more than capable and with the experience of Patrick Vieira as well another midfield isn’t necessary. This is a valid point to make but another class player can only improve the club, and surely Mancini will find a way of getting the personnel right at the club even if it means that there has to be a few departures.
Yaya Toure definitely has what it takes to be a real success at Manchester City and could even be one of their key players next season such as his quality.
Do you think Yaya Toure can fit in at Manchester City?
