As Rangers look to end their search for a new manager as early as possible this summer, the 49ers could reportedly join the race to hire an exciting young manager who learned his trade at Bayern Munich.
Rangers' search for a new manager
Ever since sacking Philippe Clement, it’s been a waiting game for Rangers in their search for a new manager. In place in the meantime has been interim boss Barry Ferguson, who has likely failed to convince enough at Ibrox to seal the job on a permanent basis. What his spell in charge has done, however, is highlight the extent of the task ahead for whoever arrives next.
On that front, several names have already received a mention in recent months, including Steven Gerrard who would have to get fans back onside following a frustrating departure to join Aston Villa in 2021. Meanwhile, if the Gers are looking for a more experienced option then Rafael Benitez could be the man to turn to this summer.
The former Liverpool and Real Madrid manager has been linked with the job in recent months and would be making his first return to the technical area since leaving Celta Vigo last March.
It’s worth noting that Ferguson also still wants the role on a permanent basis no matter how unlikely it seems. He recently told reporters: “I know what this club needs. I want what’s best for Rangers Football Club.
Rangers now set to go all out to keep "aggressive" star as PL comes calling
He’s attracting plenty of interest…
ByTom CunninghamMay 7, 2025
“I got an opportunity I never thought I would get, and I’ve enjoyed every single second of it. Some of the results I’ve not enjoyed, they have hurt me. I enjoy the challenge of it, because it is a big challenge. I always will back myself. I might not be everybody’s cup of tea, but I know I can do the job alongside the staff that I’ve brought in, but we just need to wait and see.”
It may not be any of those aforementioned options that arrive this summer, though. Instead, reports have recently suggested a new name in Rangers’ search to finally replace Clement.
Rangers could join Danny Rohl race
According to The Daily Record, Rangers could now join the race for Danny Rohl, who is reportedly set to leave his role as Sheffield Wednesday manager at the end of the season. Still just 36 years old, the Owls boss is one of the most exciting young coaches in Europe – something that has been reflected by the clubs interested in his signature in recent months.
If Rangers are to chase his signature then they could reportedly have to fend off interest from the likes of RB Leipzig, Southampton, Crystal Palace and others in a frantic battle.
Rohl’s rise should come as no real surprise. After all, this is a coach who learned his trade at Bayern Munich as both Hansi Flick and Niko Kovac’s assistant, before using the knowledge that he gained to take Sheffield Wednesday away from the dropzone despite financial restraints.
If Rangers are to turn things around and build a long-term project, then Rohl should sit at the very top of their wishlist this summer.
